Turn right here onto the O'Connell Road and head to Oberon. the road passes the famous "Scots School" on the right as you leave town. There is also a motorcycle shop on the left side and the industrial area about 100 m past the lights.

Just over the river on the left side is a nice little river side rest/ picnic area.

Nice little pub and cafe/ shop here which is a popular stop off/ watering hole/ feeding stop for bikers. often see motorcycle riding groups stop off here on their weekend rides.

Nice little township. Famous for its trout fishing, daffodil festival in September and being the gateway to Jenolan Caves area and also Kanangra State Forest and recreation area. A nice art deco cinema in the centre of town converted to a gift shop. Some nice pubs and cafes for a bite to eat and drink and a great little bakerty that serves great pies and good coffee. Just south of twon, 5 minutes drive, is the lake Oberon recreation area that has parklands, BBQs and a kids playground below the dam wall. the lake is a flyfishing lake year round.

heading out of Oberon on the Dukmaloi Road. the road is a well surfaced road with quite a few twisty areas, sweeping through farmland and pastures heading east towards the Blue Mountains

The road approaches the Jenolan Caves Road, which is the western boundary as such of the Blue Mountains and Megalong Valley.

A lovely little rest area here at the intersection of these two roads. BBQs, toilets set in a wooded area.

The road here winds through part of the rain forest on the western side of the Megalong Valley. To the right (east0 you can see the Blue Mountains in the distance and the 'fingers' of the mountains jutting out into the valley. the Hydro Majestic at Medlow Bath and Katoomba can be seen to the east from some of the scenic lookout/ viewing areas along the road.

The road here joins the Great Western Highway just outside the small historic township of Hartley. Turn left here for Lithgow. The road climbs up through a series of turns before coming to the outskirts of Lithgow.

a 70km speed limit here is patrolled regularly. Beware.

A Mccafe here at Lithgow MacDonalds provides a good rest stop, toilets, food and nice coffee. A popular stopping point for travellers. from here head along the Great Western Highway towards Bathurst

Wallerawang - or 'wang' as it is locally referred is the location of one of two coal fired power stations in the area. the other is located at Mt. Piper on the Castlereagh Highway. An alternate route is to turn off here towards Wang abd head up to Pipers Flat, where you can have a little side trip to Portland for a look see before heading back to Pipers Flat and then down Range Road to the Great Western Highway again.

Highest point of the Great Western Highway between Lithgow and Bathurst at 1100 meters. During winter the road can get affected by snow and ice causing its closure. A highway service station and cafe are patronised by truckers in the main.

The road here heads into the valley where Bathurst can be seen in the distance. Sometimes closed because of snow and ice during winter, this sction of road has a new highway services containing service station, cafe/ restaurant and even some motel accommodation attached to the services. Be wary as this road is heavily policed by highway patrol.
