There are two Servos here on the north side of the hwy and we will do well to top up at one of them before we continue onto the Alpine road. There is 255kms left to cover in this ride today

National Parks & wildlife service

We can check on local conditions here. The Nat Parks & Wildlife tourist centre is on our left soon after we pass Barry Way. A good Cafe/toilet stop here and a weather update can be had here before we continue.

Road to Thredbo

Crackenback

Just 20 kms out of Thredbo we will pass the Entrance station to the national park. If we give an undertaking to not stop before Khancoban there is no fee to pay. It is just over 80 km to Khancoban from here

The Ranger will allow us to go through if we undertake to not stop in the Park before Khancoban. Please stop here.

This road is largely down hill. Good condition

Thredbo

There are two roads into Thredbo which is on a loop, but we cant stop here. We continue past this resort.

Dead Horse Gap

There are wild brumby warning signs here and you may see droppings on the road. Be very aware of this hazard.

Police Radar area

This is a 60 zone so be aware that Radar often is set up just near this area. The whole route to Khancoban is mostly 60kpm and don't think that speeding is unchecked by police. It is.

Murray Gate Road

Road is continuously narrow but well surfaced. Kangaroos seen often.

Mt Youngal Road.

Just before this road there was a snowy construction village but little remains of it today.

Geehi Rest area

A large camp site here. Cross over a rustic bridge. Lots of kangaroos after Geehi. Wont hurt to pull over on the roadside to regroup here as there is room here to do this.

60 kpm zone commences again

Hazard Zone

Narrow raod and deep cuttings with wire mesh. Look out for fallen rocks and oncoming cars/ 4WDs. Keep speed down. Keep an eye on fellow riders behind you.

Schammels ridge lookout

Radar Zone

Popular police radar sitting spot on long straight in its mid point. Be warned and dont open up on the straight.

80 kpm zone from here

travelling north you can relax a bit with a faster road.

Khancoban

There is a petrol station here with 95 RON. Suggest top up here on the main road on the right. There is also a cafe.

Start Tooma road

This is signposted to Cabramurra and is 6 kms out from Khancoban. Also called the Khancoban Cabramurra Road

The road may be wider, with good surfaces, but there drop offs and narrow sections in places. Kangaroos in the middle of the day are common. There are snow markers here in the high sections.

Deep cuttings and drops offs. Twisty road. Narrow in places. Radar patrolled. Watch for fallen rocks on road. Not a fast road at all. Beautiful country.

The region south of here is a widerness area. you cant drive through here after June as the roads are closed in winter due to snow.

Slow zone

This is a 60 kpm area.

Round Mountain Trail head.

Happy Jacks Road intersection

Cabamurra Road

You will see snow line idicators along this section. The road has drop off and deep cuttings but the surface is generally quite good right along this stretch from Khancoban to Kiandra

Cabramurra

While this is the turn rt for Kiandra we will need to go straight ahead for the moment so we can stop at the Cabramurra Store, just 100m up the road on the rt, and have a lunch break. Only 91 RON available. Good dining room and well priced. We will turn back to the Kiandra intersection and continue after lunch. There are lookouts in Kiandra. A compass and map would be useful when using the telescopes, which appear to be provided
